Dilshad Akhtar

Dilshad Akhtar (Punjabi: ਦਿਲਸ਼ਾਦ ਅਖ਼ਤਰ), sometimes spelled as Dilshad Akhter, was a noted Punjabi singer. He also worked as playback singer in many Punjabi films. Manpreet Akhtar, a noted singer of Punjab, was his sister.His cousin, Sandeep Akhtar, died in October 2011,was also a noted singer.

Early life

Akhtar was born in the Gilze Wala (Punjabi: ਗਿਲਜ਼ੇ ਵਾਲਾ)Kotkapura town of Indian Punjab and learned music from his teacher inFaridkot.


He was killed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Gurdaspur district during a performance for a marriage party. The drunk DSP insisted him to sing a song, nachchi jo saade naal, by Hans Raj Hans but Akhtar refused as the song belongs to another singer. Provoked over refusal, the officer snatched AK-47 from his bodyguard and fired on Akhtar. The DSP was not convicted and was set scot free from charges. Singers like Kuldip Manak fought in parliament and fought for rights for other Punjabi singers after Dilshad Akthar death. Which also, failed. Due to corruption in the parliament. Videos have been released due to this.

His playerback sister Manpreet Akhtar died from a cardiovasular related illness on 18 January 2016 at the age of 55.
